This is an ancient main road, possibly with Roman origins as the sharp bend halfway down is typical of the way that the Romans tackled steep hills and it is thought probable that there was a Roman road linking the Blackstone Edge road to the road from the forts at Slack and Cleckheaton (see Ivan Margary's book 'Roman Roads in Britain'). It was turnpiked in the 18C and became the Brighouse and Elland Trust, although it was originally a road from Leeds to Elland.
