The original Balloch Castle - eastern side
See the links in the end-note for further information. The mound of the castle lies behind the nearest tree, while the line of the shallow ditch on that side is indicated by a path, leading directly away from the photographer's position, in the right-hand side of the image.

This photograph was taken from a footpath that runs parallel to the shore of Loch Lomond.
The original Balloch Castle

See LinkExternal link (at WoSAS) for the archaeological details. From as early as 1238, some charters by the Earls of Lennox were made at Balloch, indicating that they had a residence here; see, for example, the charter by Earl Maldowen, enacted at "Belach", that is given on pages 160161 of the "Registrum Monasterii de Passelet" (Maitland Club Edition, 1832), and which also appears on pages 1213 of the "Cartularium de Levenax" (Maitland Club Edition, 1833).
