It has been suggested that the round sound holes in the belfry of the Saxon tower are actually reused Roman toilet seats similar to those found at Housesteads Fort LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
Pieces of Roman altars were found in the churchyards of both Bywell churches. Both churches and Bywell Castle incorporated many Roman stones. There is also evidence that a Roman road (possibly Dere Street) may have served a bridge across the Tyne here, but no Roman fort has been definitively identified.
