The Star Inn, Harbottle
Combined pub, village shop, newsagent, craft shop and Northumberland National Park information point.
On Wednesday, 21st June 1843 when the landlord of the Star Inn was Gideon Pitloh, two young farm workers, John Brown and William Pringle were ejected for drunken behaviour. A fight broke out between the two outside and John Brown was killed after a blow from behind, causing him to fall and bang his head on the door frame. William Pringle was arrested the following day and indicted for the murder, later commuted to manslaughter. He was committed for trial on the 12th July and subsequently appeared at the Northumberland Summer Assizes before Mr. Justice Cresswell. With excellent character testimonials, no instrument being used, and with no aggrivating factors, a sentence of one month’s imprisonment with hard labour was passed.
