Part of the Aughinish aluminium plant. The waste material is known as red mud and is a by-product of the bauxite processing. It is extremely alkaline and toxic to many plants. Taken from a flight from Gatwick to Shannon that is about to land in the less usual north-easterly direction. This was the day before most European airspace was closed for six days due to an ash cloud caused by a volcanic eruption in Iceland.
