Ruins of St. Dogmaels Abbey, Pembrokeshire
Founded in 1115 by Robert Fitzmartin, Lord of Cemais on the site of an older monastic settlement. Originally a priory of just a prior and twelve monks. They chose to live an austere life close to the rule of St Benedict. The priory was raised to the status of abbey a few years later, after the import of more monks from Tiron in France. Its fortunes fluctuated greatly due to being in an area of continued conflict, and a mid 14th century plague didn't help. But it managed to improve and enlarge over the years up to the dissolution of Henry the eighth.
