Shropshire Union Canal near Little Onn, Staffordshire
Shropshire Union Canal near Little Onn, Staffordshire
One of many straight stretches of canal designed by Thomas Telford to cut down distance and time for the horse-drawn boats of the early/mid 18th century. He engineered long deep cuttings and long (troublesome) embankments to avoid both the use of locks, and the need to meander long distances around the contours as did Brindley more than fifty years before. The canal opened in 1835 having taken ten years to build.
