Lindisfarne Priory
Lindisfarne Priory
The first monastery was founded on Lindisfarne - now Holy island - in 635AD by St Aidan. It became the home of St Cuthbert who was bishop here from the 670s. The monastery later fell victim to Viking raids and the monks left. In the 12th century a new monastic church was built and, although this was never an important religious community, the buildings were impressive and much has survived to the present day. The monastery ceased to exist in the 16th century following Henry VIII's dissolution.
