Benacre St Michael
The church is almost impossible to enter. Many have tried and failed. The church has been redundant since 1978 and is owned by the estate, who tell me there is nothing of interest inside, this pleasant little church will continue to deteriorate without some air circulating inside. The south porch is built onto the south aisle which runs the complete length of the nave and chancel. It was burned down 200 years ago and restored and contains some Gooch family monuments. The font has a typical 13th c. bowl. The Royal Arms are of George II. There is a story of Sir William Gooch’s good manners as Governor of Virginia when he returned a salute from a slave; saying to a companion 'I won't have people thinking I have less manners than a slave.'
