Shielings alongside Allt na Hartaig
Unfortunately, not too easy to make out in this photograph - there are well preserved remains of some fourteen double cell shieling huts here. They are roughly figure-8 shaped, with each room being about 12 feet in diameter. They are built of dry stone walling set into a hillock. Each hut would originally have had a heather thatch roof, which would have needed repairing or replacing every summer when the huts were used as dwellings by shepherds who had brought their sheep to these higher pastures away from their township.
