Upper Teesdale, looking over to Mickle Fell. The cottages on this estate are all painted white. This is supposedly because one of the landowner's family got lost and was saved by seeing a whitewashed cottage at night.
The white walled cottages are mandated by the Raby Estates; they provide the lime, the tenant the labour. They are a feature of a large tract of Teesdale centred on Staindrop; and give a nice sense of cohesion to the area,
