The photographer having a funny tern on Inner Farne
Inner Farne offers so much free entertainment (at least, it's free if you are an NT member and have got there under your own steam by sea kayak). Terns nest everywhere, even right in the middle of the path, but they also defend their territory, so walking the paths requires a hat with a wide brim and a padded crown. The padding stops that sharp beak actually penetrating to the grey matter, whilst the wide brim fulfils two functions: one, it keeps bird poo off your features (getting it out of a beard is hard work) and two, it stops you from seeing the bird coming, so you don't flinch at the critical moment. Getting the photograph when you can't see the bird is a little more technical, but an HD video camera held at arm's length takes 30 half decent photos a second, and it's just a matter of picking the best frame.
