Bamburgh Castle from the north-west
The Old Windmill is in the centre. It was built for Dr John Sharpe in the mid C18th and would originally have had sails. It was used to grind grain distributed at reasonable cost to Bamburgh villagers during times of hardship.
St Oswald's Gate is below to the left NU1835 : West end of Bamburgh Castle. It dates from Anglo-Saxon times and was the earliest entrance to the Castle, providing access to the natural harbour. This was originally in the bowl in the left foreground of this photograph.
The area of the Castle above the gate, known as the West Ward, to the left of the windmill, is the site of the annual archaeological excavations which were started by Dr Brian Hope Taylor in 1959. Many finds have been made, including the gold plaque known as the Bamburgh Beast and the Bamburgh Sword.
