Cane Hill Mental Asylum
This hospital closed in 1991 and remained abandoned for 15 years - demolition work started in earnest in April 2006 to make way for luxury accommodation - a far cry from what the previous residents were used to.
David Bowie's manic-depressive / schizophrenic older stepbrother, Terry Burns, spent 16 years at Cane Hill before committing suicide in 1985. An image of Cane Hill can be seen in the background on the US sleeve of Bowie's single "The Man Who Sold The World".
