Prior's Chamber and Crowstone
In the background is the Prior's Chamber, the other side from TQ8787 : Prittlewell Priory, Essex. On the right is an earlier version of TQ8585 : The Crowstone. As the TQ8585 : Crowstone Plaque explains, this stone was first erected on the shore at Chalkwell in 1755 and brought here in 1950. This stone is very similar to the older of TQ7671 : The London Stones, Upnor right down the words "God preserve the City of London" on the face visible here and the shield of the City on the rear. The stone at Upnor is dated 1204 so we can be pretty confident that when this stone was erected in 1755, it was replacing an older stone.
