Prestonpans battlefield site
Prestonpans battlefield site
A replica of the standard raised by 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' at Glenfinnan to signal the start of the 1745 Jacobite Rising flutters above the viewing platform overlooking the ground on which the Battle of Prestonpans was fought on 21st September that year. Its colours are the red, white and blue of the Stuart dynasty. The platform sits atop a heap of old coal slag. The site is long overdue a visitors centre to provide a fuller interpretation of the battlefield. Prestonpans was a resounding success for the Jacobites and shocked the Hanoverian government out of its complacency. George II's son, the Duke of Cumberland, was recalled from France with army units to defend London and pursue the rebels to destruction, which he did at Drumossie Moor on 16th April 1746.
