Shieling in Glen Suardal
Shieling huts were used as temporary accommodation for shepherds who had moved their stock to higher grazing land during the summer. They are typically found in groups of five to ten, almost always beneath a craggy outcrop which provided the building material, and close to a burn. In this part of Skye, most are of twin-cell construction. It is also typical to find the remains today as little more than a pile of stones on grassy mounds. This particular shieling group is not recorded in the Highland Council Historic Environment Record, which is unusual. Wider view - NG2551 : Shieling in Glen Suardal.
