ST5138 : Milestone to Wells

Milestone to Wells
Milestone to Wells
This rather modern-looking milestone (and slightly floppy fertility symbol? ;-) indicates that the City of Wells is 8 miles distant. Found just within the roadside hedge of Moneybox Field, slightly East of the footpath that leads from the Stone Down Lane lay-by carpark to Glastonbury Tor.

Is it some sort of milestone for pilgrims, one wonders? Note the 'XI' above the destination and distance. Perhaps there are a series of stones like these around Glastonbury, for a sequenced walking tour.

The rather stylised 'new age' depiction of 3 swans is an obvious reference to the Mute Swans in the moat at the Bishop's Palace at Wells Cathedral - which have long been trained to ring bells to encourage the palace staff to feed them.
