Intended as a memorial church dedicated to the fallen in the Napoleonic Wars, the project came to a halt when the money raised by public subscription ran out. Nevertheless, the noble intention left the legacy of a stone icon which symbolised Edinburgh's pretension as 'the Athens of the North'.

"This city is considered as the modern Athens, in politeness, science and literature. The writings of its professors, divines, and lawyers, are everywhere read and admired. In the healing art it hath been long and justly celebrated." -- John Knox, A View of the British Empire, more especially Scotland, 1785

"When in 1763, the improvement of the city, by the extension of its boundaries and the erection of new public buildings took place, the people entered into the scheme with an enthusiasm which is hardly to be paralleled. Since that time the city has been extended to more than double its former size, and the streets and buildings of this new part of it present an appearance for regularity, elegance of architecture and general magnificence which has raised the eternal appearance of Edinburgh above all the cities of Europe. But Scottish vanity is most conspicuous in the public buildings. When forming the plans of many of these, it was on a scale of magnitude which the poverty of the country prevented them from executing." -- John Stark, Picture of Edinburgh: containing a description of the city and its environs, 1823
