G7346 : Sligo: Benbulbin, Gleniff Valley Old Mine Track
taken 15 years ago, 5 km NW of Glencar, Co Leitrim, Ireland

Sligo: Benbulbin, Gleniff Valley Old Mine Track.
The track starts at the Horseshoe Road in the Gleniff Valley and winds to the Southwest, around the mountain to the Glencarbury mining village. Barite was extracted from Glencarbury between 1894 and 1979. The barite was used in the paint industry and especially to add weight to drill fluids in the oil industry. Both extensive underground workings and open cast extraction took place, buildings and machinery of mining heritage interest remains on site. (Please note: The mine access track in the Gleniff Valley is strictly on private property, Trespassers Are Not Welcome. With the farmers kind permission I was granted access to walk the track. Many thanks for this privilege) Map Ref. G73289 46596 Elevation 307 metres (1006 feet) Discovery Series 16 map.
