Castles of Leinster: Coole, Offaly (1)
This castle by Coole Bridge on the north bank of the River Brosna has a third storey fireplace with a Gaelic inscription that translates as 'John MacCoghlan began from here up 1575'. It suggests that work on the tower had been interrupted in 1572 by the rebellion of the sons of the Earl of Clanricarde, and only resumed in 1575. The view is from the south bank of the Brosna looking north.
