Castles of Leinster: Carbury, Kildare (1)
Originally a C13 hall block, in 1562 it was granted to the native Irish Cowley family, ancestors of the Duke of Wellington (Arthur Wellesley) of Waterloo fame. In the C17 the hall block was extended to the north to create a fortified house typical of the period. A further added section on the east side has four polygonal chimney stacks and large mullioned windows.
