St Swithin's is one of four churches in St Benedicts Street, and its dedication indicates that it may date from Anglo-Saxon times. The original church was probably of more or less the same dimensions than the building we see today. Subject to changes during the past few centuries, which included the demolition of the tower in 1882, the church has been closed for religious worship since 1951. It has been the home of the Norwich Art Centre since 1980.
