Sculpture by Colin Davidson NZ3265 : The Vikings, unveiled on 17th February 1962 outside the Jarrow Shopping Centre (later renamed the Viking Centre) to a storm of local protest.
40 years later, in 2000, the Vikings had become a Jarrow landmark and people have called for it to be repaired and preserved LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
Jarrow was invaded by the Vikings in 794AD although they were beaten back at first before the area was eventually colonised. South Shields locals call the two Viking figures Plum and Duff LinkExternal link
