The Catholic church of St Edmund, Bungay - stained glass
The Catholic church of St Edmund, Bungay - stained glass
One of the stained glass windows in the nave, all of which were designed by the firm of Lavers and Westlake who were among many young designers who responded to the growing market for stained glass windows in the mid 19th century.

The first Catholic chapel was built here in 1823, in the close neighbourhood of two Anglican churches - St Mary's > Link in the north and Holy Trinity > Link across the road, to the east. In the late 1800s first a new chancel and then a nave and baptistery > Link were added onto the existing building, funded by two Bungay locals named Frederic Smith and Dom Ephrem Guy. The church > Link as we see it today was designed by the architect Bernard Smith who had been awarded a Royal Academy travelling bursary in 1876/77 that he used for building an archive of continental models - some of which contributing to the range of ornaments used in the Bungay church. The entrance into the church is through the west doorway > Link with its scheme of statuary depicting Saint Edmund, Pope Gregory and St Agustine amongst various others. The octagonal baptistery occupies the north-west corner of the site and was the last section to be finished. A carefully planned programme of stained glass can be observed both in the chancel and the nave windows. The baptistery can be entered at the west end of the Lady chapel > Link. In its centre there is a marble font > Link supported by 8 marble columns in alternating colours. It has an elaborately carved tall font cover.
