Looking up High Street.
Furthest away are the Almshouses NZ1665 : Almshouses, High Street, Newburn (detail) with the Duke of Northumberland's House to this side NZ1665 : The Duke of Northumberland's House, High Street, Newburn. The white building is divided into a Dental Surgery and East House. The building in the pink brick to the right has been extensively renovated but an old postcard dated 1909 shows that it was originally the offices of Spencer's Steelworks.
George Stephenson ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Stephenson ) married his first wife here on 28 Nov 1802. "George's signature as it stands in the books, is that of a person who seems to have just learned to write" [Murray's Handbook:1890].
