TL9473 : Bardwell Windmill
taken 14 years ago, near to Bardwell, Suffolk, England
Bardwell tower mill was built in late 1829 or early 1830; it replaced the village’s old post mill which was sold and moved away a few years later. A small mill of four storeys, it stands in company with its original outbuildings which include the miller’s cottage and an old bakery. Due to its size it only has two stones, other taller and more powerful mills could boast four.
Presently under restoration it can be viewed with kind permission of the volunteers or at open days. Presently the second pair of sails are being painted and assembled. One pair was put up in late August 2010. Inside is an interesting view of the governor mechanism, also the spur wheel and stones.
