HP4804 : Croft at Vigon

taken 14 years ago, 3 km from Gloup, Mainland, Shetland Islands, Scotland

Croft at Vigon
Croft at Vigon
John Omand, the last tenant at Vigon emigrated to Australia during the gold-rush of the 1850s, but returned soon after. He sailed as steward on SS Great Britain. It appears they left the farm because of excessive rent demands some time around 1869. The croft is unusually substantial, and the double gable shows the thickness of the thatching.
