Carrshield
Vividly, this simple, winding road I see,
No other car, just you and me.
Almost dreamlike, one might say
Except it’s quite as plain as day.
No need to re-define where we have been -
Yet I search a map shaded palest green
And parallel thin lines I sight
They indicate a ‘minor road’ as white.
And then to four precise dots of black
Imagination they do greatly lack!
For this is Carr Shield, which to me
Is sweet Nirvana, and afternoon tea.
On a blazing day, a sanctuary rare:
Windows, wide open, invite in air
Curtains stir, the breeze makes play
The relentless world is far away.
It is as if a secret pathway
Brought us here this day
And from that path a cinematic scene:
A walled valley cloaked all in green.
Upon that splendid stage I stand
Silently, the camera pans around.
Oh yes, the simple road to Carr Shield
Does a most expressive picture yield.
This poem was written by Norman Harris who lives in Allendale and was cricket correspondent for The Times. Despite retiring he still reports on Durham home games. Norman was also Seniors Captain and Secretary at Allendale Golf Club.
