Evolving from a motte & bailey castle built in 1138 by Henri de Blois, grandson of King William I and Bishop of Winchester 1129-1171 it became the home of the Bishops of Winchester for over 800 years and remains one of the great medieval houses of England. Though the shell keep was slighted in 1648, the Bishops’ Palace became the principal residence of the diocese and was continuously improved by successive incumbents, most notably Bishop George Morley in the 17th century.
The castle keep was put in state guardianship in 1933 Link and the Bishop’s Palace has been leased by the Farnham Castle International Briefing and Conference Centre since 1962 Link
