The Priory Church, Christchurch
Edward the Confessor founded a monastery here in 1043, probably on the site of an earlier Saxon church. Of the monastic buildings, only the church now remains. Shortly after the rebuilding of the monastery buildings in 1095, the town was renamed from Twyneham (meaning the place between rivers – ie the Avon and the Stour) to Christchurch because of the importance of the monastery which later became a priory.
