Whitley Castle (Epiacum) - northwest ramparts
Whitley Castle, at just over 1000ft above sea level, is the highest stone-built Roman fort in the UK. The Roman road known as the Maiden Way, linking Kirkby Thore in the Eden valley and Carvoran on Hadrian's Wall, passes close by. The fort's shape is uniquely rhomboidal (most Roman forts were rectangular in plan) due to the lie of the land. The earthen banks and ditches that survive today are some of the best-preserved fort ramparts in the entire (former) Roman Empire. {Source "Whitley castle"; North Pennines AONB (adapted).} As is often the case with archaeological sites, the best view is from the air - see the satellite image LinkExternal link. As can be seen, there are several modern dry stone walls cutting right across the site. I cannot understand why these could not be taken down and re-erected on its borders.
