New College Of Cobham
New College Of Cobham
Directly behind Cobham parish church is New College Of Cobham. The original college was founded by Sir John de Cobham and was a college for 5 priests. On the 18th November 1362 Sir John de Cobham received the royal license from Edward III to establish the college. The five chaplains, one of whom served as master, celebrated divine service in the church and prayed for Edward III and Queen Phillipa and John de Cobham and Margaret his wife during their lives, for their souls after death, and for the souls of their ancestors and heirs.

In 1537 the medieval chantry college of Cobham came to an end and the college fell into ruin. Then in 1597 the 10th Lord Cobham stated in his will, that the ruined buildings of the old college be rebuilt as almshouses for the relief and maintenance of the poor, and be renamed "The New College of Cobham."
