Cavan & Leitrim Railway - the end of the line, near Dromod/Dromad
The preserved section of the railway ends here, about half a mile or so from the station at Dromod. A little further on is someone's garden wall. There is a hope, that one day, the line can be extended by just over five miles to Mohill. That would mean diverting a bit from the original route, but fortunately when the Dromod bypass road was built, a tunnel was made in it, which would allow the railway to pass under the bypass.
When the railway was at its maximum extent, it went 54 km (34 miles) from Dromod to Belturbet. There was also a 24 km (15 miles) branch from Ballinamore to Arigna. Its main function was the carrying of coal, and this enabled the railway to stagger on until 1959, when sadly it closed.
