North from Normanton down the main lines past the Locomotive Depot
View NE from north of Normanton Station, towards Leeds, and Church Fenton; ex-Midland Sheffield etc. - Leeds etc. trunk line, junction of the ex-North Eastern main line to Church Fenton and York, which was the extension of the ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire main line from Manchester via Wakefield. This was a very important and busy junction - hence all the trains and smoke, especially from the LNER K1 2-6-0 coming up with a long freight, no doubt from York. The Depot - on the right - was primarily for freight; it was in the Leeds District of the LMSR Midland Division, coded 20D. The allocation (in 1954) included 3 North Eastern 0-6-0Ts for shunting the NE Yard and 44 LMR locomotives comprising 2 4-4-0s, 16 2-8-0s, 17 0-6-0s, 1 2-6-4T, 2 2-6-2Ts and 6 0-6-0Ts. The Depot survived until 1/1/68.
