River Pont, north of bridge, Ponteland
The River Pont flows north from the village to join the River Blyth just west of Stannington NZ1777
Ponteland is said to get its name from frequent deep flooding of the river often leaving the village resembling an island. Major flood defence works were instigated in the early 1990s although failed to prevent serious flooding in recent years LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
