Church of the Holy Paraclete

One of only two churches in England with this specific dedication - though Paraclete is a synonym for the Holy Spirit or Ghost which is the title of several other churches, notably the cathedral at Guildford. The other church of The Paraclete at Hom Green near Ross-on-Wye in SO5822 is no longer in use for worship and has been converted to a private residence.

Pevsner in 1957 commented on the "absurdly thin needle-spire" and the " uncommonly lovely" position beside the South Tyne. He tells us that the church, rebuilt in 1869, was "designed by its vicar, the Rev. Octavius James, without help from an architect" and includes a 13th-century west window of two lights, with a quatrefoil in the spandrel, saved from the medieval church. In the churchyard there is an undecorated Saxon cross with a head.
