Fake, 'blue' plaque, Clayton Street, Newcastle upon Tyne
This 'blue' plaque has been hanging in the street on the wall of number 87, Clayton Street NZ2464 : Clayton Street, Newcastle upon Tyne for many years and is now quite discoloured. It is engraved with the words:
'Mr T H Huxley called on a friend who no longer lived here. 7th November 1903'
If this does refer to Thomas Henry Huxley, the biologist known as 'Darwin's Bulldog' it would be strange, as he died in June 1895 Link
Many people pass by every day and fail to notice it.
A correspondent gave me the information (25 August 2012) that this and other similar plaques in Newcastle City centre were created by the artist Rupert Clamp. Four cast bronze plaques, celebrating the everyday, set into existing yorkstone pavement, were Commissioned by the Grainger Town Partnership in 2002 Link
