TL8161 : Ickworth St Mary’s church

Ickworth St Mary’s church
Derelict and uncared for is the only way to describe this church at the time of my visit. A mausoleum to the Hervey family, and a sorry remnant of the glorious church this once was. The Herveys once made themselves responsible for the upkeep of many west Suffolk churches; most notably Horringer, Westley and Chevington, and they financed the building of St John’s in Bury St Edmunds. They also promised to look after this one. How things have changed! This is the only Suffolk church in the county that you actually have to pay to see and it is heart-breaking. Although the National Trust manages only the house and grounds, a fee is payable on entrance to the Park at Horringer. At the moment the font and piscina remain in the church, and the bells still hang in the belfry. It isn’t too late to rescue this once proud and lovely church. It should be noted that the National Trust has no liability towards the church.
