Moat at White Castle - 1
A very well-preserved moat separates the Inner Gate on the left from the Outer Ward on the right. The imposing twin-towered gate house was built as part of the refortification of the castle in the 1260s. The footbridge we see today has replaced the original wooden bridge, which had a drawbridge on the left and a portcullis between the towers. Just for good measure there would have been another pair of doors on the inner side of the towers. On a very cold early March day, the water has a thick layer of ice on it.
