Royal Bank of Scotland, St. Andrew Square
Royal Bank of Scotland, St. Andrew Square
The former town house of Lawrence Dundas, M.P. for Edinburgh, who pre-empted the Town Council's plan for the site by buying up a plot of land originally intended for the church of St. Andrew which instead had to be built in George Street. On his death in 1781 it became the Excise Office, hence the royal coat of arms still displayed on its pediment. In 1828 it became the head office of the Royal Bank of Scotland which resulted in major alterations to its interior. In 1989, the main banking hall was carefully restored to its Victorian splendour.
