All Saints' church in Bircham Newton
All Saints' church in Bircham Newton
All Saints' church > Link is situated on an elevation above the road through Bircham Newton. It is one of the smallest churches in the county and dates from the 13th century. Although it has been extensively restored over time it retains its original Norman font > Link. Pulpit and pews are Victorian. Noteworthy is the C14 stone coffin lid > Link into which the effigy of a priest has been carved, in the north-east corner of the sanctuary. In its spandrels are more carvings, one depicting the sun, another the crescent moon and a third the head of a child. It has been suggested that the priest and the child were buried together.
