This must be one of the most remote habitations in all of SE England. It is one of the few features to rise more than a few feet above the expanse of Halstow Marshes, and so can be seen for miles. My late friend, Len Batchelor, who farmed at Cliffe, told me that a shepherd lived out here before World War 2. I haven't heard it said locally that the place was once a pub (as suggested by David Anstiss) but it is shown on early OS maps as 'The Shades' - which occurs as a pub name in the London area. It can never have been very accessible from the landward side, but the waters of Egypt Bay once came much closer than they do now (the horizon to the left of the house in this shot represents the old seawall). Perhaps in days when the estuary was full of small working craft there may have been some trade to be had out here. Following disastrous floods in the early 1950's a new seawall was built further north, enclosing many acres of what had been salt marsh, and leaving 'The Shades' further from the river.

My guess is that I took this shot in late November 1975, not long before sunset. A few years later the building was refurbished by a Cooling farmer, and - for me at least - lost much of its charm.
