Part of Westhope Church Meadow Green burial site
Here in the churchyard of Westhope parish church a Green burial site has been established. Trees are planted to commemorate the dead and mark their plot, rather than gravestones, with each tree carrying a plaque with their name date of birth and date of demise. Green coffins are used, made of wicker, chipboard, cardboard and other natural materials. Many are painted to designs selected by their eventual occupants long before the 'due date'. Apparently some 80 interments have been carried out this way and it is growing. A grave has been dug in readiness near the gate. The burial site is grazed by rare breed sheep. I have visited previously and seen it grazed by cattle. Not so good.
