Springburn Park was laid out in 1892 on land that had previously formed the estates of Old Mosesfield and Cockmuir House. The land of New Mosesfield was added later.

(For more on Old and New Mosesfield, see NS6068 : Belmont Pond. Cockmuir House stood where some covered reservoirs, the Cockmuir Reservoirs, are now located, about 120m south of NS6168 : The Boating Pond in Springburn Park.)

The arrangement of paths within the park makes the column that is shown in this photograph a central feature. In this view, the emblems of Ireland and Scotland appear near the base of the column, as shown in more detail in NS6068 : Column (detail).

For the volutes, faces, and the unicorn with shield at the top of the column, see NS6068 : Column (detail).

The column, which has an ionic capital, was originally the centrepiece of a fountain in Balgray Recreation Ground. That recreation ground was cleared away to make way for the Springburn Expressway.

The column was moved to its present location before 1972: William W. Barr's "Glaswegiana", which was published in that year, mentions that "this column ... was shifted from the children's Pleasure Ground a few years ago to its present site for safe keeping and protection from vandals".

The fountain as a whole, including this column, was the work of Doulton and Co., from whom it was commissioned by Sir Hugh Reid, son of NS6068 : James Reid of Auchterarder.

This category B listed column, with an Ionic capital, was once part of a fountain in the now-destroyed Balgray Recreation Ground, but is now a prominent feature of Springburn Park. It is topped by a unicorn whose shield bears a St Andrew's cross. Emblems of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England appear on the lower part of the column.
