George's Dock Ventilation and Control Station, Liverpool
Designed by Herbert J Rowse, the building at the Pier Head houses the huge fans needed to extract foul air from, and force clean air into, the Queensway road tunnel under the Mersey which opened in 1934. The tower was badly damaged in the war and was largely rebuilt by Rowse in 1951-2.
