The Swan Hotel, 46-46a Greengate Street
This old hotel is believed to have been built on the site of an old monastic college, and to consist of two houses that were probably combined together in the mid-18th century. One of these was believed to have been called The Swan. The combined building then became an inn with that name. It prospered at that time because of the number of coaches calling. By the time Charles Dickens stayed there in Victorian times, it had fallen on difficult times. Today, following a change of ownership, the hotel has been comprehensively updated.
