Reaper - the steam capstan
Reaper - the steam capstan
The 1902 sail powered herring drifter Reaper was originally fitted with a steam capstan and a suitable item has been refitted to the restored ship. This is of suitably Scots provenance being by McDonald Brothers of Portsoy and stated to be the "Patent Ideal Capstan". It is now powered by compressed air and used for demonstration purposes. The little wheel on the stack is the modern hydraulically powered equivalent.
