The terraced gardens at Bowood
The terraced gardens at Bowood
The formal terraced gardens at Bowood cover almost every period of English garden design from early Georgian onwards. The top terrace on the left was completed in 1818 by Robert Smirke for the 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne, who wanted a setting which reminded him of his time in Italy. The lower terrace was added in 1851 by George Kennedy. The terraces were originally planted with annuals in intricate designs but today they have a more simple flower bed and tree design.
