Entrance to Lake Field
Entrance to Lake Field
View north-east across Bowood Lake from the top of the steps leading down from the formal terraced gardens. A good place to survey the work of Lancelot 'Capability' Brown, who created the lake by damming two small streams, shaped the slope of the land to sweep down to the lake and planted belts of trees and an arboretum to complete the Pleasure Grounds in the 1760s. This 2,000-acre artificial landscape is considered one of the finest of the 170 or so created by Brown during his 30-year career.
